We spend so much time rolling around in the past or the future that we lose track of our lives in the present. Jesus recognizes this tendency and reminds us to focus on the day that we have at hand…
So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today. (MT 6:34)
Jesus’ words remind me that I don’t have to live in fear. God is love, a benevolent power, a gracious authority, not someone to be feared. In fact, God is the last person we need to fear. Jesus came to rid us of fear! Virtually every theophany in the scriptures begins with the words: “Do not be afraid!”
What frightens us does not come from God. (Wrestling with God, Ronald Rolheiser)
I invite you to go forward this Monday, choosing trust over mistrust.
